A year after Teaneck’s leaders voted to join a global alliance of age-friendly communities, the Township’s commitment to a more livable environment for older adults is paying off. Teaneck was recently notified it will receive a $10,000 grant through the AARP’s nationwide Community Challenge competition.

4/26/2019 1 Comment Spotlight on an Older Adult Volunteer: Wallace Lee works as preschool classroom aide Wallace Lee was the kind of parent – and grandparent – who always volunteered in schools. He was a “book buddy,” a classroom helper, a field trip chaperone, or “whatever the teacher might need help with.”
At 71, Lee is retired from a career as a business analyst. Married almost 50 years, Mr. Lee and his wife Dreina Age-Friendly Teaneck is thrilled to be offering - for the second year - an internship opportunity for high school students interested in learning more about careers in the geriatric field.
The four-week internship is open to any high school juniors and seniors residing in Teaneck, regardless of which An 85-year-old woman wanted to stay in Bergen County – where she had lived her whole life – but could no longer afford the region’s expensive rents on her fixed income.

Demand is high, supply is low; and on top of those tough market realities, there is no universal application or wait list for all of the affordable units that are scattered around the region, in buildings managed by entities many have never heard of.
Signs of new construction can be found across Teaneck, creating some opportunities for older adults looking for a more affordable or manageable type of housing.
But with high demand for affordable units in many new and old buildings, older adults might need to look for other Housing is a hot topic now in Teaneck, and two recent Township-sponsored forums on the subject serve as good illustrations of the themes that Age-Friendly Teaneck has been sounding in its effort to raise awareness of the challenges of aging in place in a suburban community.
