Careers in Aging Exploration Internship

Have Plans for Summer 2022?
How About Finding A Career Path You Didn’t Know You’d Love?

“I learned something from each and every one of them because they had such diverse backgrounds. And I took a lesson from each and every one of them… In this internship you gain a greater appreciation for the elders in your life and in the world.” - Alicia, 2018 Intern Alum

Age-Friendly Teaneck is looking for four outstanding and motivated high school juniors or seniors eager to explore the changing and dynamic realm of aging career opportunities. People are living longer and populations are aging world-wide. The demand for professionals with expertise in aging is growing rapidly. We are offering a four-week summer internship, beginning July 6 through July 29. Deadline to apply for these positions is May 16. Interns will each receive a $1000 stipend upon completion of the internship.

This Aging Careers Exploration Internship will offer a comprehensive look at the kinds of social services and businesses that are expected to grow exponentially in the next decade and beyond as our population grows older. The internship will offer a combination of a dynamic curriculum, real-world experience and one-on-one connections with professionals in the fields of aging care related social work, geriatric wellness, technology, home care, recreation, food service, housing, elder law and business management.

Interns will benefit through:
  • Learning about geriatric health and wellness career opportunities beyond nursing and medical school
  • Learning through weekly informal meetings and Q&A sessions with a variety of senior care professionals
  • Becoming knowledgeable about the myriad social services and resources available to older adults in Bergen County
  • Tearing down stereotypes, fears and misconceptions about the elder population and understanding that health is more than a medical issue
  • Understanding and communicating well with older adults as people; sharing stories and common interests; becoming more compassionate about challenges that can come with aging

“I came into this internship as a biology undergrad and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my studies. But as the internship progressed, I realized that I wanted to do nursing and I’m so glad that I made that decision because it’s actually what I wanted to do.” - Sarah, 2018 Intern Alum

The four-week curriculum will include an introductory overview of the range of senior-care career opportunities and the reasons behind their growth. Subsequent reading, video and web-based assignments will explore issues in greater depth. Also planned are visits to a variety of senior living facilities, including independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing.

Hands-on learning will focus on how in-home and social work assessments are managed; how food service and meal deliveries are planned and coordinated; how recreation activities are coordinated and run; and how wellness checks are carried out.

Interns will be required to submit a short paper reflecting on their experiences before the end of the internship. Each intern will pursue an aging-related project and will present it at an end-of-internship event.
Interns will be supervised by a team of seasoned and knowledgeable professionals, who are deeply engaged in advancing the mission of Age-Friendly Teaneck: Elizabeth Davis, executive director of The Bright Side Family and EJ Vizzi, project coordinator of Age-Friendly Teaneck.

To apply for this internship, please fill out the application below. Deadline for applications is 5/16. Interns will be interviewed in May and selected before the school year ends.

    Internship Application

Please include one letter of recommendation from a teacher, administrator, employer or someone who has served in a supervisory role.

This is not an internship where you’ll be sitting behind a desk all day. We are looking for candidates with a desire to ask questions and learn and a willingness to engage with the older adults being served.

Select applicants will be interviewed; the selection committee would first like to learn a little more about each candidate.

Please answer the following questions. Use as many words as you need to give a complete answer but a couple paragraphs would be sufficient and long essay responses are not expected.
