Signs of new construction can be found across Teaneck, creating some opportunities for older adults looking for a more affordable or manageable type of housing. But with high demand for affordable units in many new and old buildings, older adults might need to look for other ways to lower their monthly bills while their housing searches continue. The Bergen County Division of Senior Services has an Information and Assistance Unit that can counsel older adults on how to find other help, from lowering utility bills to applying for property tax relief to getting help paying for prescriptions or Medicare premiums. Counselors in the unit are trained to help older adults consider all of their options. They can also offer assistance in filling out forms, applying for benefits and making referrals to other service organizations. Call 201-336-7400 to make an appointment for “Options Counseling.” To learn more about services the county can offer, or to find it's online key services guide, log onto: www.co.bergen.nj.us/division-of-senior-services
